Terriers
Terriers were originally developed to hunt rodents and other pests. Most terrier breeds originated in the British Isles where they were used to control rats, mice, foxes and weasels that raided chicken coops, grain storage bins and kitchen pantries. Their athletic musculature, strong limbs and wedge shaped heads made these breeds well suited for digging after burrowing animals. The hard hair around their mouths, as well as their tight facial skin, served to protect them from being bitten by their prey. Terriers have either short or long-legged body types. The short-legged terriers were trained to go into dens and burrows after small prey. Examples of short-legged terriers include the Scottish and Sealyham Terrier. The long-legged terriers were originally bred to dig for game. Examples of long-legged terriers include the Airedale and Irish Terriers. Terriers come in three coat types: wire, smooth and soft. The wire-haired terriers have special grooming needs. Dead hairs must be removed by hand-plucking or clipping (in the case of pet dogs) so their coats can maintain color and texture. Familiar wire-coated breeds include the Wirehaired Fox Terrier and Miniature Schnauzer. The soft-coated terriers include the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Smooth-coated terriers include the Bull Terrier and the Manchester Terrier. Terriers have spunky, spirited personalities. Even the smallest breeds have no fear of taking on large adversaries. Although their fiery temperaments are useful when hunting rats, it can make them prone to snap, especially when overexcited children are near. Early socialization and obedience training are important -- although their independent nature can make them difficult to train. Terriers adapt well to city life, but prefer lots of exercise. Most are not particularly fond of sharing their homes with other pets, but make loyal companions for their humans. They also make excellent watchdogs. Their unique characters and appearance have made them very popular as pets and as show dogs.
