Non Sporting Dogs
Because of either their origin or appearance, the breeds in this group are not included in any other breed groups. Even within the group itself, there is no unifying characteristic other than great diversity in size, type and origin.Breeds in this group range from the wrinkled Chinese Shar-Pei, that originated in ancient southern China, to the black and white Boston Terrier, an American breed created by crossing an English Bulldog with a white English Terrier. Some non-sporting breeds look as if they should be in another group. The Keeshound, for example, looks as if it belongs in the Working Group along with other Northern type breeds. In most cases, non-sporting breeds were developed as companion animals. In the US, Standard and Miniature Poodles are the most popular non-sporting breed (Toy Poodles are in the Toy Group). Developed centuries ago as duck hunting dogs, Poodles have become well known for their clown-like behavior and ability to perform tricks. Other familiar non sporting breeds in this varied group include the Dalmatian, Chow Chow, Bulldog and Lhasa Apso.
